Birdie Group - Dec 2016

by Ken O'Connor - 18:14 on 14 December 2016

December 14th Birdie outing to Ingerness Bay, Scapa and Peerie sea.

Seven met up at the Pickaquoy carpark and drove to Ingerness as it was the most sheltered piece as wind was moderate SW’ly, we were fortunate to find a flock of ringed plover feeding at the tide edge along with young herring gulls and black headed gulls, with a few turnstones and further out a mallard and Shag with widgeon in the next bay.

Returning to Scapa there were a few different species including pied wagtails Pipit’s etc.

Then back to the Peerie sea where to everyone’s delight we saw a beautiful golden eye also long tailed and mergansers ducks, not forgetting a domestic duck which thought it was a female mallard except for white feather markings on the top it would have got away with it.

Retired to Pickaquoy café for a welcome cup of coffee to run through next year’s programme.  Counting the different species, we totalled about 18 which is not bad for a dark day in December. Many thanks to Tom for his wonderful photos which I have attached.

All that remains for me to say is to thank everyone for their support over the year and wish everyone a Happy Christmas and we shall meet up in 2017. At the moment there will be no walk in January, but more on next year’s programme in a separate email.

Ken
