BREXIT THREATENS “GOLDEN AGE” OF SCOTTISH GREEN ENERGY
SNP DEMAND UK GOVERNMENT ACTION TO PROMOTE RENEWABLES FUTURE
The SNP has demanded that the UK government commits to a long-term renewable energy plan in order to support investment in the sector after Brexit – as a leading industry expert warned that Tory policy was putting at risk a potential “golden age” for the renewables industry.
The concerns were raised by Lawrence Slade, chief executive of Energy UK, who said that ten different changes in policy over the past year were undermining confidence in the sector, whilst the Renewable Energy Association has also highlighted fifteen “negative” changes made recently by the UK government.
Adding to this uncertainty is the ongoing chaos caused by Brexit, and a complete absence of contingency planning by the Tory government. This has led to the SNP calling for greater certainty when it comes to renewable investment.
Commenting, SNP MSP Ash Denham, who sits on both the Economy, Jobs and Fair Work committee and the Europe Committee at Holyrood, said:
“These warnings from both of the renewable energy industry’s main bodies must be heeded by the Tory government – with it becoming abundantly clear that their policies are damaging confidence in a sector on the cusp of a ‘golden age’.
“The issues and uncertainty arising from the Brexit vote are only adding to the instability in the sector. We’ve recently seen the impact of Tory infighting in preventing the UK from signing up to a key EU-led pledge on offshore wind that would have been vital in supporting Scotland’s renewables sector.
“The UK government are prepared to sacrifice Scotland’s interests by instead focusing on their own internal party squabbles – propagated by the those on the right of the Tory party who harbour an ideological hatred of renewable energy. But theses attitudes risk damaging jobs and investment across the country, higher energy prices for consumers and failing in our global obligation to transition to a green energy future.
“The Tories must set out a clear plan for the renewables sector and end the continuing uncertainty that causes nothing but damage to our renewables industry.”

ORKNEY TURBINE ANOTHER DEMONSTRATION OF SCOTLAND’S RENEWABLES STRENGTH
SCOTLAND CONTINUES TO LEAD THE WORLD IN RENEWABLES POTENTIAL
Welcoming today’s news that the most powerful tidal turbine in the world is to begin testing in Orkney in a further example of Scotland’s world leading position in the renewables industry, SNP MSP for the Highlands and Islands Maree Todd said:
“This is another very positive development highlighting the incredible potential of Scotland’s renewables sector and the great strides we are making in making Scotland a world leader in the industry.
“That this news comes hot on the heels of yesterday’s good news in Shetland is great news for Scotland’s islands – proving the vital role green energy can play in creating jobs on the islands and beyond.
“We’ve recently seen positive news in the renewable energy sector in Scotland as a whole – with wind power supplying over 100% of Scotland’s energy needs one day earlier this month – and with the right support, the industry can go from strength to strength.
“However, it is vital that the UK government does not hold back its development and instead go with the tide to support renewables – to create jobs, meet our climate obligations, and serve our energy needs for decades to come.”
