On Saturday morning, the weather was more like spring than the middle of December for the Stromness Ladies Nine Hole Christmas Open Golf Championship. The ground was wet underfoot but, otherwise, conditions were very pleasant.
Twenty six Ladies took part. Fifteen came through from the Orkney Golf Club and the other eleven were members of Stromness Golf Club. The Handicap allowance was half of the official SLGA handicap, not the winter golf handicap. The scores were good with fourteen players under 40 nett.
Audrey Poke (handicap, 7) is the Christmas Open Champion for 2015. Her remarkable score of 31 nett included 3 threes and she had birdies at the fifth and ninth holes. The Runner-up was Lorraine Work (8.5), also of SGC, with 34.5.
Sheila Walls (11) of SGC took third place with 35, after countback with Maggie Learmonth (11) of OGC who also scored 35.
Shona Croy (2,5) of OGC and Ann Sinclair (10.5) of SGC both scored 35.5.
Shona was also first gross with a fine 38. Audrey Poke was also 38 gross but, since it is a nett competition, she was awarded the champion’s prize.
The competition was organised by Elaine Wishart and sponsored by Elaine Bentley with beautiful prizes from her Quernstone Christmas Shop. In addition, each player who took part was given a Christmas tree bauble. We thank her very much.
Prize List: nett: 1 and Christmas Open Champion, Audrey Poke (7) 31; 2 Lorraine Work (8.5) 34.5; 3 Sheila Walls (11) 35 (after countback with Maggie Learmonth).
Gross: 1 Shona Croy, 38.
Back in the Clubhouse, Chessa Couperwhite did a sterling job, ensuring that the soup and mulled wine were ready to revive the players as they came in.
Winter Golf will resume on Saturday, January 9th. We wish all golfers, male, female and junior, a very happy Christmas and good golf in 2016.
