Competition Formats

COMPETITION FORMATS

THE FOLLOWING 3 MATCH PLAY COMPETITIONS MUST BE ENTERED IN ADVANCE
There will be a sheet up in the locker room at the beginning of the season or contact Anne Spence before the closing date.
Each match/round must be played by a date specified on the draw sheet (although the Committee can grant an extension if deemed appropriate).  The trophy will be presented on the date noted on the fixtures (so the final must have been played by this date).
It is up to the person on the top of the draw to arrange the matches and failure to do so will result on the player at the bottom going through to the next round.
Handicap of 36 or less

1. D G SPENCE CUP
Match play Foursomes – ½ handicap difference of combined handicaps
Pairs are seeded one high and one low handicap.
Only the first round is fixtured.       If you are unable to play on the fixture date you can arrange your match for an alternative date.   Subsequent rounds have dates by which each match must have been played (although the committee can grant an extension if deemed appropriate).  The trophy will be presented on the date  noted on the fixtures (so the final must have been played by this date).

Singles Match Play Competition – full difference between handicaps

3. HELEN SINCLAIR MEMORIAL
Singles Match Play Competition for aged 50+ (players must be aged 50 by the 1st of April).

In the event of a draw after  the 18th  hole in all of the above match play competitions – the match is decided by playing the first four holes and then sudden death (taking handicaps into consideration if applicable)

 

 

CENTENARY CUP   
18 hole Stroke play competition.   Enter name on sheet in advance.
Run in conjunction with the Men and Boys competition.
Handicap of 36 or less

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
Stroke play competition.   Enter name on sheet in advance.
Played over 2 rounds - usually 1st round on the Thursday and 2nd round on the following Saturday (same day as the mens + boys comp).  Both rounds are timed.  1st round – low handicaps out first.  2nd round – high handicaps out first.
Seeded draw (usually reverse order for 2nd round).  Played in 3’s.    Timed draw (to fit in with men/boys).
Handicap of 36 or less

FOINAVEN TROPHY
18 hole stableford competition.   Turn up for draw time.
Handicap of 36 or less

GEMINI TROPHY 
Stableford competition.  Turn up for draw time.
Best 2 rounds out of 3
Handicap of 36 or less

HARVEY CUP 
Strokeplay completion.   Turn up for draw time.
Best 3 nett scores out of 4 rounds.
Handicap of 36 or less

HEDDLE CUP AND JOHN KEMP QUAICH
Ladies County Championship  Gross and Nett Cups.   Enter name on sheet in advance.
2 round stroke play competition (one round in Stromness, one round in Kirkwall – the order of which alternates each year).   1st round on Saturday and 2nd round on Sunday followed by presentation and meal.
The final round host sets the draw (both rounds) and arranges the prizes.  Draw is reversed for the second round (still in same groups as much as possible).
You are encouraged to enter both rounds but can enter 1 round only.  
Handicap of 36 or less.  Member of Stromness GC or Orkney GC.

HEDDLE TROPHY  
18 hole stroke play competition for over 50’s.   Turn up for draw time.
Best 2 nett scores out of 3 rounds.   Handicap of 36 or less.

HIDDEN HOLE
Eighteen hole competition with 9 “hidden holes” which are selected by a non-competitor once everyone is in (or beforehand and sealed in an envelope).   Turn up for draw time.
Winner is the player with the best nett score at the chosen holes. ½ handicap is deducted from score.
Handicap of 36 or less

INTER-COUNTY (ORKNEY V SHETLAND)  
Handicap of 36 or less.   Played in pairs over 2 days.
If you are interested in travelling to Shetland please let Captain know or enter name on sheet.
Held around first weekend in September.  Hosted in order – Stromness – Dale – Kirkwall – Whalsay.
2013 venue – Whalsay.      Matchplay pairs competition

IRIS SUTHERLAND CUP
Eclectic competition played over 8 fixtured rounds.   Strokeplay played over the 1st nine holes.
The lowest score on each hole over the 8 rounds is calculated and the lowest overall total is the winner.   Open to anyone who has  not yet attained a handicap and to anyone with a handicap of 34-36.   Scores achieved after handicap reduced to 33 and under will not count.

JUBILEE CUP
18 Hole Stroke play competition.   Enter name on sheet in advance.
Handicap of 36 or less

KNOWLES LADIES OPEN
18 hole stroke play competition.   Enter name on sheet in advance.
Event held in conjunction with the mens Streamline Open.
Handicap of 36 or less

MACKAY MEMORIAL TROPHY
Two ball Mixed Foursomes
Joint Kirkwall/Stromness competition, hosted alternate years
Everyone is free to enter and partnerships are drawn on the day (although pairs are from same club)

MR & MRS COMPETITION (MIXED)
Greensome Foursomes
Trophy can only be won by a Mr and Mrs couple (although mixed couples can enter and win prizes!)
Draw takes place on the day - Shotgun start
Open to players of any handicap (those with no handicap will adopt a given handicap depending on their ability.

MIDNIGHT FOURSOMES
Two ball foursomes (usually, but may vary!)
Mixed competition.   Draw done on the night
Open to players of any handicap

ORKNEY LADIES MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIPS
2 qualifying rounds.   Knowles Open SGC and W. Hourston Open OGC
Best 8 gross and nett scores qualify (best 8 gross taken first then nett from remaining scores)
Please notify committee if unable to take part in knock-out rounds
Match play knock-out rounds played on Tuesday and Thursday.  Finals played on Saturday along with 18 hole Open.

ORKNEY LADIES OPEN
18 hole strokeplay Competition.   Enter name on sheet in advance.
Played on the first Saturday in June as part of the North of Scotland Calendar.
Hosted alternate years in Stromness and Kirkwall
Handicap of 36 or less.    Meal.

PUTTING CUP
9 greens in play with 2 putting stations marked at each.  Player with least number of shots from the 18 stations wins.
Run in conjunction with the men and boys.
Drawn on the day.   2pm start.

REXALL CUP
Match play competition Stromness against Kirkwall
Played over 2 rounds (one in Stromness, one in Kirkwall), the order of which alternates each year.
Teams of 8 players from each Club (picked by the Ladies Handicap Committee) Players may be selected for one or both matches/legs.   Supper after 2nd leg.

RINGER
Summer Ringer is played over 18 holes
Summer Ringer for beginners is played over 9 holes (the first 9 holes)
The score which counts as the first round of the ringer is a fixtured date.  If any player cannot attend on this date, then the first 18 holes played after that date will be entered as their first score.
After a full round has been written up, players are entitled to change one hole per round thereafter, provided they have completed at least 12 consecutive holes (or 6 in the case of the 9 hole ringer).  The score of any one hole may only be improved/changed 3 times and must be initialled by the marker of the scorecard.  The score changed must be circled on the scorecard and returned to the Handicap Secretary or to the “ringer box” in the locker room.
Ringer scores can be taken from scores obtained from playing off either the red or yellow markers.
At the end of the season, the scores are calculated and the winners (Gross and Nett) are read out at the Salamis Presentation Dinner.

RINGER (WINTER)
Winter Ringer is played over 9 holes (winter holes are 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 13, 14 and 18). 
Same rules as the summer ringer apply. 

SALAMIS TROPHY
18 hole strokeplay  - Close of season/last competition of the year.   Enter name on sheet in advance.
Handicap of 36 or less
Play is usually early as men have an Open Comp.  Dinner at a hotel in evening.

SKIRTS AND OUTSKIRTS
Team competition run in conjunction with the Salamis
Stromness town residents (skirts) v’s outlying areas (outskirts)
The best 6 nett scores count towards the prize – winning team also announced at the Salamis Dinner

SLGA MEDAL
Bronze/Silver division players with the best aggregate of 4 nett scores - of the SLGA Medal fixtures throughout the season – will qualify for the Regional Finals the following year.  Minimum of 6 SLGA’s to be fixtured  with Max 18.   Turn up for draw time.

SHOPPING WEEK LADIES OPEN   Run in conjunction with Philips Trophy
Strokeplay competition.   Enter name on sheet in advance.
Played in conjunction with Philips Trophy (for Stromness Ladies)
Played on the Sunday of Shopping Week.  Times to fit in with men and boys competition
Handicap of 36 or less
 

PHILIPS TROPHY
Strokeplay competition
Played in conjunction with the Shopping Week Open although not an “Open” competition itself
Open to all Stromness members entered in the Shopping Week Open

STENIGAR STABLEFORD CUP 
18 hole Stableford competition.   Turn up for draw time.
Handicap of 36 or less

STROMNESS LADIES OPEN
18 hole strokeplay competition.   Enter name on sheet in advance.
Played on the Sunday after the mens open on the Saturday
Timed draw.   Meal.

TRADES CUP
Strokeplay competition played in teams (determined by occupation)
Average nett score from each team is calculated as team numbers vary, lowest wins!
Teams drawn and decided on the day.   Handicap of 36 or less.

WILSON TROPHY  
Stroke play competition played in conjunction with Eclectic (see below).  Turn up for draw time.
Best 2 nett scores out of 3 rounds
Handicap of 36 or less
ECLECTIC
Played in conjunction with the Wilson Trophy
