Play Park

The Members of this Sub Group have sucessfully raised together with the support of the Community over £5000 towards the scheme, this involved various fund raising events, Raft Races, Movie Nights and Fancy Dress events. The children of Shapinsay were involved in the plan for the Playpark which would benefit the community and visitors to the island.

The Playpark has now been  resurfaced thanks to further funding from OIC CDF fund and a donation from Balfour Estates.

A successful day was had by all residents of Shapinsay to open the Play Park. There was a Logo Competition with the winner, Kaidence Muir, cutting the ribbon to Officially open the park.

Thanks and  Final Update Jan 2011

The Playpark has  finally been passed by OIC and apart from  Grass seeding and Benches the project has now officially been completed.

The Trust would like to thank the following Organisations who kindly helped donate funds towards the project.

The Gannochy Trust

The Robertson Trust

The Trusthouse Charitable Foundation

OIC Early Years

BBC Children in Need

Orkney Islands Council CDF Fund

We would also like to thank the Community of Shapinsay for their Generosity in raising the initial fund to achieve the project.

Update 25 Sept 2010

Well the weather has lived up to  expectations but despite this the Playpark is having the final  grass mats placed around the area .The Contractors will leave tomorrow and the playpark will have to stay closed for a few more weeks in order for the grass to get  established again. Fencing will be erected to extend the playpark and then will  will have to  have the area signed off by Orkney Island Council.  It is hoped that at a  later stage the Council are going to do some maintenance work on the existing equipment and it  is still proposed to replace the old  tiled area with grass matting. This will take place after further funding sources have been  found.

It is hoped that the project will enable the children of Shapinsay and Visitors to the island to have a safe environment to play in.

Update 8th Sept 10

The work has started on the drainage to the site despite the weather  taking a turn for the worse. By the end of the  week the site should be ready for the equipment contractors to start on the laying of grass matting and the  erection of the equipment.

There will be  swings, climbing frame as pictured at the bottom of this page, a springy thing for the  under 5s

and a pendulum swing and new roundabout as shown  below.

Update 17th April 2010

The Project is well underway with funding secured from all but one source. The Outcome of the Children In Need application is due at the end of this month and hopefully work will start on the Play Park as soon as we have confirmation.  There are still a few hurdles to  go through but at least we are on our way to securing a safe place for the  Children and Visitors of Shapinsay to play in.

Update May 2010

We have now secured the final  grant from Children in Need and are  planning to start work on this project within the next few months.
