The Scapa Flow Landscape Partnership Scheme has been a three year project set up to deliver 48 projects which are focussed around the Scapa Flow area. The staffed period of the project draws to an end at the close of 2012, so this site - so important for keeping people in touch with activity since 2009 - will soon become dormant. The scheme has created a lasting website - www.scapaflow.co - which will permanently host a huge range of information about the archaeology, cultural heritage and wildlife of the Scapa Flow area. The partnership has been led by Orkney Islands Council, Scottish Natural Heritage and the RSPB, but dozens of organisations and many more individuals have been heavily involved in the numerous projects. The work of the Scheme has been defined by the Landscape Strategy which can be downloaded from this site - click on the Landscape Strategy button on the menu on the left of this page to find out how.
The Strategy has the following vision:
To create a deeper and more unified understanding of the Scapa Flow area’s landscape, including the natural, built, and historical landscapes, and to promote and support its sustainable management, use and enjoyment by as many people as possible – locally, nationally and across the world
The scheme's projects have been supported by a wide range of funding bodies. The largest of these has been the Heritage Lottery Fund, with the European Regional Development Fund also investing heavily in parts of the scheme, including the website work. Other funders have included Orkney Islands Council, RSPB, SNH, Historic Scotland, The Robertson Trust and the Scottish Government and EC through the Orkney 2007-2013 LEADER programme.
