Beginnings
Sanday , one of the most northerly of the Orkney Islands, has been inhabited for some 5,000 years, and the Sanday Development Trust intends to make sure that the island's future is secure and sustainable so that people can continue to live here for another 5,000 years.
Sanday Development Trust was launched in March 2004, prior to Sanday's inclusion in Initiative at the Edge in October that year. The Trust is a company limited by guarantee and has charitable status, and replaces the Sanday Development Group that was first formed in 1986.
Purpose
The Trust exists to encourage and support local people to take responsibility for the renewal of their own community. The Trust belongs to its members. Directors on the Board are simply ordinary members who have stepped forward and volunteered their time for the Trust.
At the AGM everyone is invited to help to identify the priorities for the following year (drawn from the themes identified in the island development plan) in order to produce an annual plan to which the Trust works. Other ideas and issues do arise as the year progresses, and some can be pursued if there is particular urgency and the capacity to do so.
If someone has an issue or an enterprising idea that falls within the Trust’s remit (as opposed to other bodies, such as the Sanday Community Council, OIC, Orkney Enterprise, the Scottish Executive) and is prepared to volunteer their time to lead or join a sub-group to pursue it, they are given every encouragement and support. If the Trust is not the appropriate forum to take the item forward, we try to point people in the right direction.
At all times the Trust welcomes interested members to offer their time to work on a sub group, to attend meetings and to stand for election to the Board.
Working with the community, the Trust has idenfitied key areas for action, namely:
- Creating a climate that encourage local entrepreneurship, attract economically active people to the island and encourage the development of high value jobs
- Working with the Sanday Community Council and the appropriate agencies to ensure that affordable housing is available for all who need it
- Working with the appropriate agencies to ensure that remoteness doesn't affect our quality of life and that our infrastructure and all our services remain up-to-date and effective
- Working with the Sanday Community Association and Sanday Community School to enable our community facilities to remain of the highest standards, and that they meet our current and future needs
These key areas form the basis of the Sanday Development Plan, encompassing a wide range of projects that im to meet the needs and aspirations of the whole community.
