Holm Regatta 1982

Holm Regatta brightens dull day

Holm Sailing Club held their Annual Regatta on Saturday, July 31 on a rather dull day. The light breeze, which increased slightly during the day, kept the programme well up to time.

The course set at the start continued all day - a beat from start line to a buoy along the shore of Lambholm, a reach to No. 2 Barrier, a run to a buoy in front of Holm Village then a short reach to the finish line, twice round.

The various rescue boats stationed round the course had little to do till the start of the Centreboard race when all boats were bunched at the starting line.

Just as the starting gun went two boats were over the line and Samara, in the centre of the second line of boats, capsized going right over. A recall was fired and after Samara being righted and bailed out, with no damage done, the race was successfully restarted.

At the end of racing an excellent meal was served by the ladies committee following which prizes were presented to the successful competitors by Mrs. W. Scott.

The club would like to thank the officials from Orkney Sailing Club, the Coastguards for their invaluable assistance, other rescue boats for standing guard in case of accident and to the ladies for providing the hot meal. Mr. Leslie Tait on behalf of visiting sailors thanked the Holm Club for their hospitality.

Kirkwall Regatta 1982

47 Boats Turn Out For Kirkwall Regatta

An Almost record turnout of 47 boats from places as far apart as Westray, Holm, Stromness, Rousay and Burray, put to sea on Saturday for the annual regatta of the Orkney Sailing Club.

The weather was unsmiling with a grey fog and frustratingly light variable N to NE wind and it was obvious that to carry out the sixteen different categories of races there would have to be some curtailment of the programme.

This was done by having the boats complete the triangular course Crowness-Greenfield once only, instead of twice as is the practice in normal weather conditions. In the event only two races , the Allcomers and the Scollay Cup race for Catamarans remained uncompleted by 5 o-clock and it was decided to hold these on the following afternoon, Sunday August 8.

Gala Air

Despite the poor conditions on Saturday there was nevertheless something of a gala air about the harbour with the Muti coloured sails of dozens of boats relieving the greyness of the sea and the foaming wakes of brightly painted speedboats and water skiers providing spectacular displays of aquatics for the spectators on the pierhead and around the harbour.

But if conditions were dull on Saturday this was more than made up for by the thrills and spills witnessed in the remaining two races on Sunday afternoon. A change in weather had brought clear skies and a very strong south westerly gusting up to force 10 in heavy squalls. Of the 22 boats that crossed the start line in the Allcomers race to Crowness, Greenfield and back, only 15 completed the course, at least four or five having capsized on the first and second lap and others simply returning because of the wind force.

Capsizes

In the Catamaran race for the Scollay Cup a very long one round Scargun buoy, Thieve’s Holm and back, and again round the shorter Greenfield-Crowness course, only two of the five entrants completed the course. One Catamaran broke in two between Crowness and Scargun and another two capsized in very strong squalls. Rescue boats had a very busy time and the thanks of the clubs are duets the coastguards and to the several private boats and crews who gave timely and valuable help.

After the completion of the first set of races on Saturday afternoon crews and others connected with the regatta were provided in the Girnel with an excellent hot meal prepared by the Ladies Committee of the Club and again with tea at the end of the afternoon races.

Presentation of prizes took place in the girdle at 8 o-clock and before calling on Mrs. D. Sutherland to present the prizes, Mr. Bruce Dunnet, the Club Commodore thanked the visiting boat crews, rescue boats, timekeepers and not least the Ladies Committee and the many others who had contributed to the success of the occasion. To round off the day’s events there followed a dance and social evening in the Girdle which was very well attended and greatly enjoyed by all.
