Volunteers wanted!

Orkney Zerowaste is happy to announce that is would like applications for new volunteers. We have various roles throughout our work in Orkney. Some based in Stromness at Steptoze Yard and others from home or at events. Some details are below. We also have some potential vacancies for our Love Food Hate Waste initiative and are develooping a local tool library, we will forward these details very soon. General Housekeeping Volunteer

Purpose of role:                               To help keep SteptOZe Yard clean and tidy

Main activities/tasks:                    

Collection and transfer of broken or unusable items to a Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC)
Collection and transfer of site recyclables to a HWRC
To promote public understanding of the work of Orkney Zerowaste
Other suitable tasks as required

Qualities/experience:                   

Keen
Knowledge of recyclable materials
Knowledge of  recycling
It helps to have a sense of humour, and to be flexible in your approach to work as this role can be quite varied
The ability to work with a range of people is helpful

Training provision:                           As required for role

Availability:                                         From 1 to 5 hours per week during Mon/Wed/Sat 10-3.

There is generally a degree of flexibility with this role to suit the availability of volunteers.

Title:                                                      Maintenance Volunteer

Purpose of role:                               To help look after the site

Main activities/tasks:                    

Grounds maintenance – weeding, grass cutting, veg plot
Buildings maintenance – painting and small repairs
To promote public understanding of the work of Orkney Zerowaste
Other suitable tasks as required

Qualities/experience:                   

Horticultural/gardening knowledge
DIY skills
Practical
Hands on
It helps to have a sense of humour, and to be flexible in your approach to work as this role can be quite varied
The ability to work with a range of people is helpful

Training provision:                           As required for role

Availability:                                         From 1 to 5 hours per week during Mon/Wed/Sat 10-3.

Title:                                                      Scrapstore Volunteer

Purpose of role:                               To help with the Scrapstore project

Main activities/tasks:    

Sourcing of  recycled material or items (bruck)
Assessment of bruck suitability
Cleaning of bruck
Making bruck safe to use
Delivery to schools
To promote public understanding of the work of Orkney Zerowaste
Other suitable tasks as required

Qualities/experience:                   

Educational background an advantage
An understanding of the aims of Scrapstore
Practical
Imaginative flair
Enthusiasm
Commitment
It helps to have a sense of humour, and to be flexible in your approach to work as this role can be quite varied

Title:                                                      Swish volunteer

Purpose of role:                               To promote re-use of items

Main activities/tasks:                    

Organise swishing (swapping) party with friends
Weigh materials brought in

We have a unique volunteer opportunity. Do you like to have friends over? We would like folks to have swapping parties or swishing as it’s known. It can be swishing clothes, jewellery, toys, tools – anything that might otherwise be skipped!!     

We will provide support and contribute towards the cost of the event (party). Don’t worry if there’s anything leftover we will pick it up if you wish & recycle it.

Training provision:                           Induction training must be attended

Availability:                                         From 1 to 5 hours per week during Mon/Wed/Sat 10-3.

There is generally a degree of flexibility with this role to suit the availability of volunteers.

Title:                                                      Upcycling/Reuse Volunteer

Purpose of role:                               To take on small upcycling or reuse projects to inspire others

Main activities/tasks:    

Upcycling of items for display as examples of ‘art of the possible’
Reuse of items e.g. bikes and bike parts
To promote public understanding of the work of Orkney Zerowaste
Other suitable tasks as required

Qualities/experience:                   

Creative
Practical
Hands on
It helps to have a sense of humour, and to be flexible in your approach to work as this role can be quite varied
The ability to work with a range of people is helpful
