SteptOZe Yard hosts RSPB Wildlife Explorers

At the end of May SteptOZE Yard hosted the RSPB Orkney Wildlife Explorers group for an afternoon.

Our SteptOZe Yard manager, Fay, had the children (and adults!) planting the new compost garden with wildflowers

There was also a chance to learn about how to make lovely rich compost for the garden out of, well....rubbish!

And to hear how to make a wormery as well as have a chance to meet some of our Orkney Zerowaste worms (they are some of our hardest volunteer workers!)

And Fay donned her serious “rocket scientist” disguise (rocket scientists always wear white coats) and showed everyone how to make a rocket and see how far they could shoot it!

And a chance to sit in the sun and blether about rockets, recycling, worms, compost, wildflowers and other fun things....

We had lovely feedback from the RSPB Wildlife Explorers:

“All the children had a fantastic time planting the wildflower meadow, and I’m sure many will be coming back with their parents to see how it is progressing over the summer.  The rockets were a huge success and I’m sure many parents, myself included, will be looking out pieces of old plastic pipes, bottles and magazines to make our own versions.  To top it all off the goody caddies were a fantastic idea and I know many children will be trying out recipes and thinking a lot more about what they do with unwanted items.  Once again a huge thank you to you and all the hard work you put into this.”

A great time was had by all and we hope they return next year too!
