PAST EVENTS

In the beginning we had an annual programme of regular ceilidhs/dances around Orkney with a few specials added as the opportunity arose.

We have moved away from the set programme of events and have developed more regular workshops and a variety of other events.

Summary of past events:

  • Mats Melin – was the first tutor taken in to run workshops for us usually in conjunction with the Science Festival.

  • Maria Leask – has come to Orkney to undertake programmes of workshops in schools as well as in Kirkwall as Mats had done.

  • Karin Ingram – came up from the Borders to deliver a course on “Calling for Dance”.

  • David Cronie – eventually made it to Orkney to deliver his distinctive style of workshops once he had recovered from a heart operation.

  • Jessie Stuart – against the odds of weather, finally arrived in Orkney to undertake a weekend of workshops and dances returning to hold a workshop on Hoy during our First Fringe Events.

  • Bands - we have also held dances with bands from south - Nicol McLaren, Ross MacPherson and Gordon Pattullo.

  • Fringe Events - 2006 - Awards for all helped fund our first 'Fringe Events' in Rousay, Stenness and Hoy together with the three communities.  This gave us a taste of what was to come.

  • Orkney Ceilidh Weekend - Our first major event was held as part of the Highland 2007 celebrations. This turned out to be a very memorable event.

  • Orkney Ceilidh Weekend 2008 - Our 2nd ceilidh weekend was again a huge success, keep an eye for details of our 3rd ceilidh weekend in 2009.
