SYFA VISIT ORKNEY
OYDG played host to the Scottish Youth Football Association top brass on March 22nd as National Secretary David Little and President Jim Dolan paid a flying visit to the County. Following a visit to the new All Weather Pitch in Stromness the SYFA representatives attended the OYDG AGM on Thursday evening. After viewing the new facility Mr Little stated that the provision of the new all weather pitches was the “start of something really special” which would greatly aid the development of the game in Orkney. Addressing the AGM the National Secretary spoke of the challenges facing youth football including the introduction of new legislation on disclosure, the cost of hiring facilities which was an issue all over the country, and the increasing competition from other sports. Speaking highly of the visit of the Scotland Under 15’s Development Squad to Orkney in 2010 which he described as a “phenomenal experience”, Mr Little gave a commitment to bringing one of the Scottish Regional squads north to play in Orkney next Summer.

There are major changes at the helm of OYDG following the AGM held on 22nd March. Stepping down after five years of sterling service are Chairman Jim Cormack and Secretary David Murdoch. Performing his final act as Chairman Jim reflected back on the highlights of his period in the Chair which included the 2009 Orkney Youth Football Festival and the visit of the Scotland Under 15's Development Squad in 2010. He also highlighted the progress made by the County's youth squads which was a credit to the quality of the coaching staff and he hoped that the success at youth level would translate to the senior level. The pursuit of all weather facilities resulting in the new pitches in Kirkwall and Stromness was also a major achievement. Paying thanks to all those that had assisted him over the years he paid particular thanks to David for his work as secretary of the organisation. OYDG would like to thank both for their dedicated service to football in Orkney and wish them well in their retirement from youth football duties. Jim is succeeded as Chairman by Stephen Crawford and David's secretarial role is being taken over by Euain Penny.
