Westray man is District Governor of District 1010
The newly appointed District Governor of Rotary in the north of Scotland is Westray man, George Berstan, who paid a visit to the Orkney Club this week. Mr Berstan, born and raised in Westray, spent his working life in community education and is now retired in Turriff. Since taking on the role of District Governor he has attended the Rotary International Assembly in San Diego and in the next year will, along with his wife Mary, visit all 88 clubs in the District, which extends as far south as the river Forth.
Mr Berstan reminded local Rotarians that the theme for the year was “Building Communities, Bridging Continents” and said that special emphasis was being given to youth. Young people could learn much from Rotarians, their values and acceptance of responsibility. The Orkney Club already has links with young people through the sponsorship each year of two young people attending the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards outdoor adventure camp. New, younger Rotarians have been recruited in recent years and this builds optimism for the future of the Club.
President, John White, welcomes the District Governor, George Berstan.
