Join Kirkwall Kayak Club for a unique opportunity to explore an are of Orkney's coastline with RSPB staff on hand to talk about the wildlife you will see. Kayak and clothing provided. Footwear not provided, bare feet is fine, or bring footwear you don't mind getting wet. Participants should bring dry clothing, towel and snacks/drink. No experience necessary, this event is suitable for complete beginners. Age 18+.


Introduction to Wildlife Recording – Orkney Vole on Rousay

Come to the island of Rousay to learn about wildlife recording and the Orkney vole!

This event on Rousay is a chance to learn the basics about wildlife recording with a short talk and to try some practical fieldwork. One of the focuses will be on the Orkney vole, a charismatic mammal and one that is unique to the Orkney Islands, and the field techniques to look for voles.

Attendees are expected to arrange their own travel and food. Toilet facilities at the ferry piers and at the venue (exact location TBC). Please bring warm and waterproof clothing for practical outdoor session of the event. Suitable for children aged 12+. Anyone under 16 should be accompanied by an adult. 

If you are travelling from Mainland Orkney, you will need to book a return ferry ticket in advance with Orkney Ferries. The outward ferries on Sunday depart Tingwall at 10.45am. See Orkney Ferries’ Rousay Summer timetable for more details of journey times.

Come and join British Divers Marine Life Rescue and see what it takes to look after and provide first aid to cetaceans and seals when they are at their most vulnerable. This family friendly session will give people the opportunity to witness a dolphin rescue as well as a chance to have a go at learning the techniques needed to rescue a seal. There will also be an opportunity to chat to medics and find out about how you can play your part in protecting our seas. All rescues will be completed using the BDMLR training aids NOT live cetaceans and seals.

Join Whale and Dolphin Conservation for a taster Shorewatch session and to look out for whales and dolphins around Orkney. Binoculars will be provided, and Emma Steel will be there to guide you through some hints and tips for spotting marine wildlife. If you’re interested in learning how to identify different species and how to carry out a dedicated Shorewatch survey, Emma will be on hand to tell you more and answer any questions.

Members of the RSPB Scotland team will be on hand to help you spot the different species at this amazing seabird colony. Come along and see Orkney’s newest gannet colony, plus learn a bit more about the lives of the seabirds on Marwick’s bustling cliffs. You might be lucky and spot a puffin! Drop in at any time.
