Orkney Housing Association Limited (OHAL) was established in 1985 to complement the housing activities of Orkney Islands Council. It is a non-profit making, charitable organisation with a membership open to anyone interested in supporting its aims. There are currently 158 shareholding members of whom 64 are also tenants of the Association. The organisation is managed by a Management Committee elected from the general membership at its Annual General Meeting.
The Association is a member of the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations (SFHA) which is the trade body representing approximately 200 housing associations throughout Scotland. The SFHA along with Communities Scotland, the national housing agency, sets standards of good practice with which registered housing associations are required to comply.
The majority of OHAL’s funding for its house building and renovation programme comes from Communities Scotland in the form of capital grant known as Housing Association Grant (HAG). Additional capital funding is provided by lenders such as high street banks and building societies. To date the Association has provided over £32 million worth of housing which has been funded from £25 million HAG and mortgages totalling approximately £3.2 million which are serviced out of rents. The housing stock comprises 434 rented and 73 shared ownership properties which are dispersed throughout the mainland and islands of Orkney.
