ORKNEY INITIATIVE AT THE EDGE

Initiative at the Edge (Iomairt aig an Oir) was established in 1998 with the aim of encouraging and supporting a community-led, mulit-agency approach to achieving a sustainable future selected areas designates as the most economically and socially fragile in the Highlands and Islands.

In Orkney a number of areas have already benefitted, or are set to benefit, from involvement in the initiative.

Westray and Papa Westray entered Initiative at the Edge (IatE) in March 1998. Although no longer officially part of IatE, the development trusts in these two areas remain active and continue to progress a range of exciting and innovative projects.

Eday and Stronsay joined IatE in April 2004, with Sanday and North Ronaldsay entering later the same year - in September. All four islands have since established development trusts, recruited part-time development officers and have produced development plans for their communities.
