Following on from the Primary Singles & Doubles Competition held back in November, local Building Firm R Clouston Ltd again sponsored this Primary Competition. Orkney Badminton thank them very much for their continued support in the youth development of Badminton in Orkney. A huge thank you to the Organisers and Helpers. A special mention to the Youth Development & Senior Players who came to umpire and co-ordinate court management throughout the day, especially the ones who helped where required, far longer than their allocated times! Parents/coaches who were there also stepped in to help when they could, which was much appreciated. Everyone there pulled together to keep things running smoothly. 5 Schools had 12 Teams entered, namely Firth(3), St Andrews(3), Glaitness(4) Orphir (1) & Papdale(1). It was fantastic to have a team from Orphir competing for the first time and we look forward to seeing more players coming through from there in the future, thanks to Mark Clouston and his helpers. The standard of Badminton played was fantastic and well done to all the teams and their coaches. Glaitness had a very good result with 2 teams in the top 4 overall. Papdale Smashers (Jamie Clouston, Archie Flett, Charis Reid, Adele Flett) made 3rd place overall by only 7 points, after drawing 3 games each against the very determined Glaitness Laughing Cows (Ewan Flett, Charlie Corsie, Alanah Johnston, Keira Stevenson) The Final between St Andrews A (Sam Rendall, Ryan Mooney, Freya Stevenson, Neve Hall) and Glaitness Golden Smashers (Reid Kemp, Tommy Ballantine, Molly Cant, Kasey Garriock) had everyone on the edge of their seats with all the players pushing each other to win precious points. Both teams were level at 3 games each, so again, all the points were added to decide the winner. By only 2 clear points, the champions on the day to claim the Shield for their school was St Andrews A. Bob Clouston presented the Medals to the delighted 3rd place Papdale Smashers, 2nd place Glaitness Golden Smashers and 1st place St Andrews A. Results are shown below;
GROUP 2 St Andrews A in 1st Place winning 12 games, 2nd Place Glaitness Titans winning 4 games, 3rd Place Firth Ashaway winning 2 games GROUP 3 Glaitness Laughing Cows in 1st Place winning 12 games, 2nd Place St Andrews B winning 5 games & 3rd Place Orphir winning 1 game. GROUP 4 Papdale Smashers in 1st Place winning 10 games, 2nd Place Firth Yonex winning 6 games & 3rd Place Glaitness Turbo Tigers winning 2 games.
Crossovers than had the 1st placed Teams in each Group playing for 1st -4th places overall, 2nd placed Teams in each Group playing for 5th -8th places overall and 3rd placed Teams in each Group playing for 9th -12th places overall.
4th-8th Places Play-offs; Semi Final C – Firth Yonex 4 St Andrews C 2. Semi Final D – St Andrews B 5 Glaitness Titans 1. 7th & 8th Places – Glaitness Titans 3 St Andrews C 3 (G Titans won on points 115 108. 6th & 7th Places – Firth Yonex 4 St Andrews B 2.
1st - 4th Places Play-offs; Semi Final A – Glaitness Golden Smashers 6 Papdale Smashers 0, Semi Final B – St Andrews A 5 Glaitness Laughing Cows 1. 3rd & 4th Places – Papdale Smashers 3 Glaitness Laughing Cows 3 (Papdale won on Points 102 95) 1st & 2nd Places – St Andrews A 3 Glaitness Golden Smashers 3 ( St Andrews A won on Points 107 105) These OBA Age Group Tournaments have by far the greatest entries and the future of these are dependant on many more than the usual faces giving their support and help when required. Thanks to the dedication of coaches in Orkney, along with the input of professional coach Angela Bell, there has never been so many youngsters playing, Our Youth Development success is thanks to a fully stretched and wonderful team who are now appealing to all OBA representatives, players and parents to help us keep Badminton one of the most popular winter sports. Please make yourselves available to us next season, whether helping at groups/sessions or at the competitions when so much cover is required on the day.
