Welcome to North Ronaldsay Trust's website.
First of all, a welcome to visitors to our website.
£300,000 Heritage Lottery Fund Award
The Trust is very pleased to announce that it has been awarded £300,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund. For full details please see the NEW LIGHTHOUSE RENOVATIONS page.
The North Ronaldsay Trust is a company, limited by guarantee with charitable status. It was set up on 15th September 2000 and has a worldwide membership of 160. The stated objectives are ".....to preserve and restore the built and natural heritage of the island; to promote industry and commerce; to provide or promote the provision of housing; to generally help to improve the quality of life on the island by creating job opportunities and attracting people to the island either to live and work or as tourists.
In order to achieve these objectives the Trust has been actively engaged in fund-raising and promoting awareness of the island's needs.
So far, the Trust has secured the purchase of the lighthouse buildings which became vacant when the lighthouse was automated. Some of these buildings have already been converted to provide a workshop for a mini-mill to process the wool of the unique breed of North Ronaldsay seaweed-eating sheep.
Our next project is to convert the Principle lighthouse keeper's cottage into a shop and cafe for visitors to the lighthouse tower (see Lighthouse page for details).
We also have plans for the other two lighthouse keepers' cottages; we are applying for funding to convert them into luxury self-catering holiday accommodation which will be let through the National Trust.
The Trust produces a newsletter called "The Foghorn" which is sent out to members as and when there is news to tell. It also keeps distant members up-to-date with island activities.
The New Kirk has been another of the Trust's projects. The Trust bought it from the Church of Scotland when they decided that it was no longer viable as a place of worship. The necessary repairs were carried out by mainly voluntary labour in time for a wedding which took place in May 2003 and it was the venue for another wonderful wedding which took place in August 2004. An Island Archive exhibition is currently on show in the New Kirk.
Thank-you for visiting our website, please log on again soon as we plan to provide pictures, maps and more information about the North Ronaldsay.
