Make the move to North Ronaldsay!
Orkney's northernmost island is in the process of regeneration, with several projects to provide new accommodation and employment opportunities now close to completion.
Orkney Housing Association have developed two new houses, carefully designed to fit sympathetically into the landscape. And the North Ronaldsay Trust is looking forward to the lighthouse complex being ready to go into operation by end of May.
The work at the lighthouse has involved the conversion of several buildings. One of the former lightkeepers’ cottages is becoming an interpretation centre, with café and shop. The other two cottages are being upgraded into 4-star holiday accommodation.
Another of the lighthouse buildings now houses the island’s wool mill, spinning the fleece of the unique breed of seaweed-eating sheep.
The combination of visitor centre and holiday accommodation at the lighthouse will create several job opportunities, and the structure of the employment is currently being worked on.
The Trust was established in September 2000 with a strong development remit:
- to preserve and restore the built and natural heritage of the island
- to promote industry and commerce
- to provide or promote the provision of housing
- to generally help to improve the quality of life on the island by creating job opportunities and attracting people to the island either to live and work or as tourists
On this site you can find out more about the work of the Trust and the tradition of island community life that it is committed to support.

Thank you for visiting our website. Please log on again soon as we plan to provide pictures, maps and more information about North Ronaldsay.
