Malawi Music Fund was founded in Orkney in 2006 after our founder had spent a year in Malawi teaching music in government schools and working with choirs and local musicians. The project set out to use music and the arts to enrich the lives of some of Malawi’s most needy and vulnerable orphaned children.
We run residential workshops for orphaned children in Mulanje, a rural area in southern Malawi near the Mozambique border. And because secondary education is not free in Malawi, we provide bursaries to enable the children to attend secondary school.
The group has developed into a fine children’s choir – Likhubula Children’s Choir – which has performed in Mulanje, in nearby Chitakale and Thyolo and in Blantyre, Malawi’s second city. The children have even sung for a delegation from the Scottish government!
Singing, dancing, drumming, wearing their choir uniforms and taking part in public performances all help to build the children's confidence and self-belief and to foster pride in their achievements.
Our website will be developed over the coming weeks. Meanwhile, if you would like to know more, please contact us:
