Commenting on the SNP manifesto commitment to continue with Road Equivalent Tariff (RET) ferry routes to the Western Isles and to look at extending them to the ferry routes to the Argyll and the Clyde islands, but with no commitment to reduce fares to Orkney, Liam McArthur, the Scottish Liberal Democrat Candidate for Orkney said that this added insult to the injury which Orkney had suffered during the prolonged bogus ‘pilot’ of RET fares to the Western Isles.

Liam McArthur said, “It was bad enough that Orkney suffered a competitive disadvantage to the Western Isles during the ‘pilot’ of RET on the Western Isles routes. But now, adding insult to injury, we find that it was just a ‘pilot’ of a scheme which could be rolled out to other west coast islands, and not to Orkney. But RET would cut fares on the Pentland Firth.  Unlike the SNP, Liberal Democrats have a commitment to give a fair deal to all our islands.
“I suppose that, given their track record with our ferries - removing Orkney's lifeline ferries and attempting to slow down sailings while also slashing budgets - this should come as no surprise. Clearly the SNP has no interest in reducing the burden imposed by ferry fares on Orcadians and Orkney businesses. If we want help from the SNP, we will have to up sticks and move to one of their favoured islands off the West Coast.

Ferry fare commitment in the SNP Manifesto: “We will continue with Road Equivalent Tariff on the current routes, and look to roll out to the Argyll and the Clyde islands in light of the Western Isles pilot.”
