Orkney MSP, Liam McArthur, has welcomed the extension which NFU Scotland has won from the Government to allow small farmers more time to apply to the Crofting Counties Agricultural Grant Scheme (CCAGS) before they are excluded from the scheme. But has repeated his belief that the Government’s decision to exclude them from the scheme is wrong.

Liam McArthur said,” The NFU has managed to get the Minister to extend the deadline before which non-crofters must have completed the scheme’s required Economic Status Test by a month, moving it from the end of February to the end of March. The NFU now understands that small farmers can still undergo the required economic test this month, providing they still have their CCAGS application submitted by 31 March.
“That is welcome, but the main point remains that the decision to exclude small farmers, who are not registered crofters, from CCAGS is wrong. The longer term interests of small farmers, many of whom are in Orkney, will be damaged. The loss of their access to CCAGS is still extremely serious.”
