WHO ARE WE?Home-Start Orkney is a voluntary home-visiting scheme which offers free support, friendship and practical help to families with at least one child under the age of five. Families are visited regularly in their own homes by volunteers who have all had experience of parenting, and know how hard it can sometimes be. The first Home-Start scheme was launched in 1973 and there are now 340 schemes working across the UK and with British Forces families in Germany and Cyprus, supporting over 34,704 families. Home-Start Orkney was launched in late 2001, and is the most northerly scheme in the UK. Our service is free and confidential. We are managed by a voluntary Board of Directors. They employ a Co-ordinator, who is responsible for recruiting and training the volunteers before matching them to families, as well as the day-to-day running of the scheme.
