OIC Protect your children online seminar (Games Room)
9 March 2015
Starts: 19:00
Ends: 21:00

OIC Press Release Nov 2014 "Protect your children online Parent and carers across Orkney who want to build their confidence and learn more about internet safety will be able to access free informative workshops on this subject in the coming months. The workshops, being organised by the Council’s Community Learning and Development Service with assistance from its partner agencies, are based on the ‘Thinkuknow’ programme which was developed by the UK Centre for Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP). The workshops will be led by Orkney’s CEOP ambassador, Pete Nicol, who is a youth worker and manager of Orkney’s Youth Café. Janette Mackie from Get IT Together Orkney will be attending sessions too to offer support and advice to parents and carers who have little or no IT knowledge. Being able to discover and share the benefits of the internet and retain control can give parents and carers the confidence to know their children are safe online." Kerry Spence said: “Over the last few years we have run internet safety sessions for pupils and for staff working with children. It’s clear to us though that the main place that children are accessing the Internet is at home. It is therefore important that parents and carers are aware of the ways in which youngsters use social media and the risks they face, from cyber bullying to sexual exploitation. “Parents will come away from the workshops with a better understanding of these risks and advice on how to help their children keep safe online.” The charity ChildLine says it has seen a large increase in the number of children contacting it with concerns about online bullying. It saw 4,507 cases of cyberbullying in 2012-13, up from 2,410 in 2011-12. NOTE FOR EDITORS The Get IT Together programme is all about instilling confidence and empowering people to get online - making the most of what the internet has to offer.
