Summer Open Exhibition 2019

by Stephanie Cullen - 16:28 on 25 July 2019

This year has been a rather busy year for us at For Arts Sake, we were very lucky to exhibit the product of a fruitful chain of weaving workshops held at our Loom Room to celebrate Scapa 100; everybody who attended came away with a beautiful piece whether they were first time weavers or not. With that in mind, we weren’t sure if we were going to hold our annual Summer Open Exhibition, but we’re glad we changed our minds!

Yet again, we have a variety of different arts and crafts. We have had beautiful knits by Anne Lea which sold within minutes, we have some fantastic detailed pyrography of trains from Brian Case, textured abstract art by Kailey Stovall, we even have a large fully-felted sheep which caused some of the staff in the attached offices to do a double-take with shock as to why there is a sheep in the vicinity. It’s been a rather fun exhibition to have, yet again.

While the weather outside has been somewhat frightful this summer, there are some beautiful summer colours upstairs to cheer us up. Pat Sutherland has entered two fantastic rugs made by binding an assortment of coloured rags together- a fantastic method of using up those odds and ends of fabric at home, the colours she’s used are very bright and bold. These colours also feature in works by Martin Laird, cubist paintings portraying some of Orkney’s late great suffragists such as Stanley Cursiter and Phyllis Hourston. Liz Rickard has entered another one of her fantastic detailed Orkney pieces, this time showing a number of people enjoying their selves at the Churchill barriers, a Scapa Scuba van is out and about while people enjoy a swim or dive, making the most of a rare sunny day. Meanwhile, Kim Burns has felted a banner in which one can search for a groatie buckie among stones, a great Orkney beach activity (at least in our gallery, you can stay dry while at it).
The Summer Open Exhibition is wrapping up this week, many thanks to the artists who entered, come see it before it goes! The gallery is open Monday- Friday 10-5 and Saturdays 10-4.
