Harbour seals (also known as common seals) have lived alongside man in Orkney for thousands of years. But recently there has been a dramatic decrease in numbers: in 2001 there were 7,700, now there are only 1,800, a reduction of 76%.
The Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU) at the University of St Andrews are carrying out a long term investigation into this decline.
