Community Hall TurbinesBackgroundThe development trust secured grant funding at the beginning of 2009 to install 3 wind turbines, one for each of the Rousay Egilsay and Wyre community halls. The aim is to assist in developing and sustaining the amenity of community facilities and resources on each of the three islands through the co-ordinated use of renewable technologies. The technology will provide affordable warmth and help reduce the facilities' running costs. Other benefits include reduction of carbon emissions and small revenue generation to help with the long-term running costs of facilities and investment into existing, or creation of, new community endeavours. Where are we now?Following initial letters notifying residents of the project in May 2009, various communications took place. These included a ballot on Egilsay to gauge support and on-site discussions with residents on Rousay to agree the location for their turbine. After a successful Egilsay ballot and a few tweaks to the three original location plans the application for planning permission has been submitted for all three community turbines. These are available to view on the Orkney Islands Council website. The turbines are 6kW Eoltec wind turbines on a 12 or 15m tower, similar to those installed in various locations around Rousay and at Howe on Egilsay (see photo) To view the Egilsay location plan click here To view a diagramatic representation click here To view noise management document click here The planning applications for all three community turbines have now been accepted and are available to view on Orkney Islands Council website under planning / search for online applications. 29 June - a meeting was held with Community Energy Scotland, RSPB and Egislay Community Association - a lease agreement will now be drawn up between RSPB and Egilsay Community Association for teh Egilay turbine site B J Rendall are fully accredited installers under the micro-generation certification scheme (MCS) and have made site visits to all three locations and found each of them suitable for the installations. The proposed Eoltec turbines have an extremely good track record for performance and reliability and more information on the turbines can be obtained from B J Rendall’s website www.bjrendall.co.uk Progress updates relating to all three community turbines will appear on the REWDT website and can be found under projects.www.orkneycommunities.co.uk/REWDEVTRUST
