LOCAL INFORMATION

Orkney DASAT was established in 1995 in response to the government requirement that local areas set up Drug Action Teams within Health Board boundaries. This was an amalgamation of previously separate alcohol, drugs and smoking forums.

What is DASAT?

DASAT STRUCTURE

Orkney DASAT has recently changed its structure in line with national recommendations that have highlighted the need for both a strategic and operational level of action. DASAT's membership and structure is constantly under review to ensure that all agencies with a part to play in tackling substance misuse issues are represented. This includes a commitment to engage service users in this process.

DASAT MEMBERS

The Orkney Drug, Alcohol and Smoking Action Team comprises the Strategy Group and the DASAT Operational Group and a Services sub-group. Additional short-life sub-groups convened as necessary and appropriate.

DASAT Strategy Group – reflects the Scottish Executive guidance for all Drug and Alcohol Action Teams across Scotland. It is a strategic group with a remit to influence the strategic direction and planning of member organisations, and to co-ordinate activity to tackle substance misuse throughout Orkney. The Strategy group meets at least three times per year (February, June and November) to coincide with the national ADAT and SAAAT meetings.

DASAT Operational Group – is a multi-agency group convened to provide support to the DASAT Strategy group members in creating, reviewing and implementing the DASAT Strategy and Action Plans. It co-ordinates and delivers activities to address substance misuse in Orkney. There is wide representation on this group from both the statutory and voluntary sectors to ensure appropriate multi-agency responses to substance misuse in Orkney. The Operational Group meets at least four times per year (March, June, September and December) to support the DASAT Strategy Group.

DASAT Services Sub-group – is made up of key service providers, delivering services for those experiencing or affected by substance related problems. The group acts as a forum for service providers to discuss issues which affect service provision. It plays a key role in exploring service needs and pursuing opportunities to develop appropriate services for Orkney.

The last 3 years have involved the establishment of these groups and developed effective partnership working. As DASAT move into the next phase of development, the emphasis is on consolidating partnerships and focusing on quality service delivery. The other main priority is to ensure that DASAT has a high profile in the community and is seen as accessible to all.
