Orkney Outdoor Access Policy

We were lucky enough to have representation from Orkney Islands Council with regard to carriage driving access to the countryside (and access in general), our rights and of course our responsibilities, and were given the opportunity to voice our concerns and highlight some of the positive aspects of our experiences out and about.

The subsequent discussions were very interesting; our understanding of the Core Access Path initiative is much more informed as carriage drivers, riders and of course walkers. Specific issues were raised and concerns noted as well as a much more general chat. This was a good opportunity for use to explain our needs regarding access/passing places (how tight a turning circle we require without taking the horse out of the vehicle a la Windsor Coach Drive some years) "Kent gap" ideas and all sorts!

So if you know of any tracks/pathways etc that you're not sure about and don't know who to ask: then please contact the Access Officer, although currently vacant, there will be someone responsible for this statutory function on 01856-873535 or from more information, check out the Council website by clicking HERE. Advice on access, upgrading paths and all sorts of useful information is available, we just need to ask!

Let's keep the old farm tracks, peat roads, and rights of way open for future generations and let's be responsible countryside users too!
